OUR BASE CAMP
All check-ins and check-outs happen at Base Camp HQ in Mill Bay, BC, right in the south end of the Cowichan Valley, midway between Victoria and Nanaimo.
It’s a pretty perfect launch point: wineries, swimming holes, bike trails, and farm stands are basically the local love language. Start here, stock up, and hit the road feeling dialled.
Check-in:
Plan for a 30–45 minute orientation where we’ll walk you through both the driving and camper sides of your Westfalia. You’ll leave confident, comfortable, and ready for adventure.
Check-out:
Check-out takes 15–20 minutes and includes a quick post-trip walkaround to confirm kilometres, check for any damage, and make sure everything’s in good shape for the next crew.
Planning note:
Please plan your arrival and departure times to allow for the check-in and check-out windows above.
HOW TO GET HERE
Free Pickup Spots:
To make arrivals simple, we offer free pickup 30 minutes before your scheduled check-in time, from the Mill Bay Ferry Terminal, Mill Bay Center and Old Town Duncan.
Arriving in Victoria:
Vicotira Airport (YYJ) or Swartz Bay Ferry:
If you’re landing at YYJ Airport or arriving via the Swartz Bay ferry, we highly recommend taking a taxi or rideshare to the Brentwood Bay ferry terminal and walking onto the ferry to Mill Bay. It usually saves a chunk of travel time and skips the longer drive around, and honestly, taking a ferry is one of the most Vancouver Island ways to begin an adventure. It’s a tiny “welcome to Island time” moment before your trip even starts.
When you arrive at the Mill Bay ferry terminal, we will pick you up and get you the rest of the way, nice and easy.
Arriving after 5:00 pm?
Brentwood Bay is a beautiful place to stay your first night. It’s close to the ferry, it’s calm, and it gives you a low-stress start the next day. There are waterfront parks and calm beaches that feel like a soft launch into Island time, plus great spots to grab dinner and settle in before the road trip begins.
Arriving in Nanaimo:
Nanaimo Airport (YCD):
If you’re flying into Nanaimo Airport, the 70 NCX bus is a simple and affordable way to make your way down to Duncan before pickup. It's a handy choice if you want an affordable and easy way to get closer before pickup.
Departure Bay Ferry Terminal:
If you’re arriving through Departure Bay Ferry Terminal, IslandLinkBus is a simple, pre-booked way to head south toward Mill Bay Center or Duncan. It’s a great option for guests who want a straightforward connection after the ferry. IslandLinkBus releases tickets about three months in advance, so if you’re booking your trip far ahead, make a quick calendar note to grab your bus ticket when that window opens.
Hullo Ferry Terminal:
For guests spending time in downtown Vancouver before heading to the Island, the Hullo is an especially convenient option. Hullo runs a passenger-only ferry between downtown Vancouver and Nanaimo, which makes it an easy walk-on route for backpackers. From Nanaimo, you can continue south toward Duncan on the 70 NCX bus and turn the journey into part of the adventure.
A first stop in Old Town Duncan:
If your timing gives you a little breathing room before check-in, Old Town Duncan makes a great first stop. Grab a coffee from the Duncan Garage Cafe, stretch your legs, and wander the famous totem pole walk. It’s an easy way to ease into Island time instead of rushing from terminal to pickup. We offer pickup from Old Town Duncan starting 30 minutes before your scheduled check-in time
Shuttle Service:
We do offer a round-trip shuttle service for $250, servicing downtown Victoria, airports and ferry terminals to Base Camp Adventure Rentals in Mill Bay. Please message us to arrange a shuttle.
